Where does the “Palmeiras Has No World Title” meme come from?
The taunt was born from a calendar quirk: on November 30, 1999, Palmeiras lost the Intercontinental Cup final to Manchester United, and in January 2000 Corinthians won the FIFA Club World Championship by beating Vasco da Gama. Journalist Flávio Adauto, director of the newspaper Gazeta Esportiva and a Corinthians fan, then sent FIFA a fax asking it to confirm his club as football's first world champion; the positive reply made front-page news, and on January 27, during a derby between the two rivals, Corinthians fans were already chanting about their world title. Palmeiras claims the 1951 Copa Rio as a world title, but FIFA's council, in 2017, did not include it among the titles officially recognized by the governing body.
