Where does the “Raça Negra’s Young Superfan” meme come from?
On October 22, 2000, four-year-old Luis Sales, a fan of the pagode group Raça Negra, appeared on the Topa Tudo por Dinheiro segment of Programa Silvio Santos on Brazilian network SBT. His father knew stage director Liminha and had sent in a home video of the boy singing Raça Negra songs, which got him onto the show. On stage, Luis sings to a flower that is supposed to wilt if the song is good; when it wilts, he cries and says “I’m pretending I’m crying.” Silvio then asks whether he’d rather have 1,000 reais or a “fodrografia”, the boy’s own pronunciation of “photograph”, with Raça Negra. Luis picks the money, making the whole audience laugh. The clip resurfaced online decades later and became a meme.
