In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Sandsverse” is a common card of the Memes World series 76, number 22551 of the collection, and the 44th best-known meme of its 298 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Sandsverse” meme mean?
The word names a collective game in which each blog plays an animal selling an absurd product, such as sand, fruit or gravel. Its charm lies in committed absurdity: characters answer each other, argue and slowly build a shared mythology. Mentioning Sandsverse points to the surreal Tumblr humor of the 2010s, to the way a joke among friends can grow into a whole world, and to the nostalgia for short-lived, creative and slightly chaotic online communities that nobody planned and everybody remembers.
Where does the “Sandsverse” meme come from?
On September 23, 2014, the account sandsvendor100 made its first post, introducing Seymour, a tapir who sells sands. Other blogs joined the universe, including fruitsoftheape100, featuring Elmer, a proboscis monkey selling fruit, fishboy100, a fish selling gravels and salts, and boarofthenorth100, with Horace. In mid-July 2015 a flood of new blogs led the original members to take a break, because they felt the activity had become diluted. A fan wiki was later created to track characters and lore. In February 2017, an episode run like an alternate reality game brought attention back: according to community accounts, an entity called Zhdun took over several blogs before things returned to normal the next day. The archive Tumblr breachdetected was created on February 16, 2017, and Know Your Meme added the entry on February 17.
