What does the “Don't Trust Me” meme mean?
The joke is the gap between a rescue gesture and a flat betrayal. Everything rides on the final beat: the helping hand pulls away and the smile confirms it was on purpose. It is dark humor, but harmless in practice since it is all cartoonish and exaggerated. People use it for a fake offer of help, a trust-me moment that goes wrong, or a friend who picks the worst possible time to play the villain.
Where does the “Don't Trust Me” meme come from?
3OH!3 released Don't Trust Me in the United States on June 1, 2008, as the lead single from their debut album, Want. The music video followed in October 2008. The meme came later. On April 29, 2010, animator Milizapiainc posted an animation on YouTube showing a woman hanging from a cliff. A male character reaches out, then throws her down, and the clip ends on his grinning face. More parodies appeared soon after, mostly animated and often featuring furry characters. On August 6, 2010, an edit by Mint Chip passed 65,000 views. On July 24, 2017, yeagar uploaded the version Know Your Meme calls the most popular, which went past 200,000 views.
