What does the “Guitar Hero Full Combo” meme mean?
A full combo, or FC, means not one note was missed from start to finish. Adding 100% stresses total perfection. These videos fascinate because of the technical feat, the focus and the stubbornness of players who drill a passage for hours, note after note, until the run is clean. People share them to celebrate a win, compare skill levels, or argue whenever someone in the comments suspects a bot did the playing.
Where does the “Guitar Hero Full Combo” meme come from?
Guitar Hero first came out in 2005, and the earliest known full combo videos were uploaded in 2006. Players were already using the guitar’s whammy bar to trigger Star Power, a score-multiplier mode. Guitar Hero II and III, on PS2, Xbox and PS3, added much harder songs such as DragonForce’s Through the Fire and Flames, placed near the end of the game. Rock Band then widened the field with drums, bass and vocals, with Overdrive as its Star Power equivalent. As of January 26, 2016, YouTube searches showed about 856,000 hits for Guitar Hero FC. The most-viewed full combo video in the series, of Through the Fire and Flames, has passed 5.6 million views since June 3, 2008. Some players have also been accused of using bots.
