In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Smokey Bear meme” is a common card of the Memes World series 76, number 22586 of the collection, and the 84th best-known meme of its 298 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Smokey Bear meme” meme mean?
The meme takes a reassuring public-service character and gives him wildly disproportionate rage. Where the poster politely asks you to put out your campfire, the remixed bear promises payback. The gap between schoolroom mascot and threatening tone is the whole joke. People use it to mock a safety reminder, to play nature’s self-appointed enforcer, or to react to someone being sloppy with fire. The calmer the tone, the funnier the threat.
Where does the “Smokey Bear meme” meme come from?
Smokey Bear was created in 1944, when wartime propaganda was at its height. His first poster, released August 9, 1944, reminded hikers to put out their campfires. He became hugely popular and later gave his name to fire-safety legislation. The online side begins on June 10, 2004, when Something Awful’s Photoshop Phriday contest asked users to recaption Smokey images, drawing at least 42 entries, many showing him angry or threatening. In the mid-2000s, QuickMeme published a run of Smokey image macros, with the most shared one riffing on his famous prevention slogan. On June 26, 2013, a Reddit thread about a cloud shaped like Smokey over a burned hometown collected more than 3,250 upvotes. On January 26, 2014, the official Smokey Twitter account posted a supportive message to Pharrell Williams after the VMAs.
