Where does the “J'ai des amis arabe” meme come from?
Morano was then a member of the European Parliament and a former minister, trying to clarify earlier remarks about far-right voters with whom she had said she shared “the same values”. On a France 5 programme on 21 June 2012 she moved on to friendship as proof of innocence and produced the escalation that made her famous online: Arab friends, then a Chadian best friend, therefore “darker than an Arab”. Political reporters picked the clip up the same evening, and it was put back into circulation by campaigning accounts and by YouTube re-uploads, including one posted in November 2014 by the anti-racism group SOS Racisme that gave it a second life. The passage runs about ten seconds, which makes it an ideal size for an isolated quotation.
