In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Super Grêmio” is a rare card of the Brazilian Memes pack, number 124 of the collection, and the 1st best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Super Grêmio” meme mean?
The meme captures the gap between inflated expectations and the actual outcome: a team (or project, or person) hyped as unbeatable that ends in disaster. “Super Grêmio” is now used for any situation where someone got too excited about signings, plans, or predictions, only to fall flat soon after.
Where does the “Super Grêmio” meme come from?
In 2021, Grêmio signed Douglas Costa and Rafinha, big names that raised expectations among fans and coach Renato Gaúcho, who informally nicknamed the squad “Super Grêmio.” The team, however, went through four coaches that season, suffered injuries to key players like Geromel and Douglas Costa, was knocked out in the early rounds of the Copa Libertadores, and got relegated to the second division in November 2021, the club’s third relegation ever. The gap between the triumphant nickname and the outcome sparked parodies still repeated whenever a team promises big and delivers little.
