Where does the “Sniper Serra” meme come from?
The source photos date from a May 2007 ceremony, where José Serra posed aiming through a rifle scope and then smiled. In May 2010, while running as a presidential hopeful, a Tumblr user turned the two photos into a four-panel template: Serra aiming, any disaster slotted in between (a tragedy, a lost game), then his smile, as if he had caused it. Because only the two middle images needed swapping, the format was easy to copy and spread fast, first on Tumblr, then on Facebook, Twitter and Reddit.
