What does the “Cosmic Ray” meme mean?
The meme stands for a stroke of luck so improbable that people explain it with a cause from the cosmos. It evokes a particle traveling the universe for billions of years to land in the right place, on the right console, at the right moment. It is used for an inexplicable event that turns out to someone’s advantage: a lucky glitch, an outsized bit of fortune, a success with no apparent cause. The tone is amused, with a touch of respect for the phenomenon’s rarity. It speaks to gamers and science-curious people alike.
Where does the “Cosmic Ray” meme come from?
The meme comes from the Super Mario 64 speedrunning community, players who try to finish the Nintendo 64 game as fast as possible. During a run, the player DOTA_TeaBag was launched upward in the Tick Tock Clock level for no apparent reason, which saved him time. The event, called an “upwarp” by enthusiasts, led to a bounty and many video analyses trying to recreate it. Later, an explanation took hold: a cosmic ray had flipped a bit in the console’s memory. Several videos, some presenting the story as a myth, still discuss it. The meme keeps that poetic image of a ray traveling for billions of years to land right on a Nintendo 64.
