“Tu joues les marlous ?” meme: meaning, origin and common card

What does the “Tu joues les marlous ?” meme mean?

It casts doubt rather than insults. The French word “marlou” means someone acting hard, and the question takes them at their word: if you are playing the part, see it through. People bring it out at a friend promising payback that will never happen, at someone puffing their chest behind a screen, at a player calling the win before the end. The strength comes from the stagecraft, a theatrical, almost overblown delivery that stops the jab being taken seriously and lets it fly between friends without offence.

Where does the “Tu joues les marlous ?” meme come from?

Omar et Fred is the duo formed by Omar Sy and Fred Testot, known to French audiences for their television sketches before moving to the stage. The line comes from their show, a clip of which was uploaded to YouTube in February 2010 under the title “Omar et Fred le Spectacle - TU JOUES LES MARLOUS?!”, on the SpesheulKaiye channel. That clip is what kept the phrase alive online, since searches on the title surface only a single on-topic re-upload, the rest of its circulation happening through spoken quotation. The phrase broke away from the sketch to become a reply of its own, understood without having seen the show.
