What does the “Mais stop, putain !” meme mean?
The phrase does not argue, it cuts. People use it against an explanation running three minutes late, a joke repeated once too often, a voice message that will not end. Its usefulness is that it attacks no substance: it only asks for a stop, which makes it usable even when you agree with whoever you are interrupting. The swear word is punctuation rather than insult, the sign that you held on as long as you could before speaking.
Where does the “Mais stop, putain !” meme come from?
Sofyan is a French video maker known for reaction videos, where he comments on content while regularly raising his voice; his register of sudden exasperation has handed the French-speaking web several standalone lines. The phrase belongs to that register and circulates in particular on the jeuxvideo.com forums, where a thread is devoted to it. The sources consulted do not allow the exact video in which it is spoken to be named: the clip chosen for the card, “LE SON DE VOS VIDÉOS, BORDEL !” published in November 2015, comes from the same author and the same register, with nothing proving the line appears in it. Searches on the title surfaced no on-topic re-upload.
