What does the “WRONG! / Lex Luthor” meme mean?
“WRONG!” expresses a brutal contradiction, yelled with absurd intensity. The meme brings Lex Luthor in to contradict any statement at all, and the humor comes from the mismatch between a mundane subject and a theatrical reaction. In the edits, his sudden appearance is followed by massive damage, which pushes the absurdity further. People reach for it to show a sharp, over-the-top rebuttal, or to mock an opinion so wrong that it deserves a spectacular response, with the shout acting like an instant reaction image.
Where does the “WRONG! / Lex Luthor” meme come from?
The meme comes from a scene in the trailer for Superman Returns (2006) in which Lex Luthor, played by Kevin Spacey, shouts “WROOOOONG!” at Lois Lane. It began on YTMND on May 23, 2006, with the site “Lex Luthor owns Kaz Hirai” by stratos-the-bratos, part of the E3 2006 meme wave. A second template, “Lex Luthor owns Scientology” by RedBaron, established the common pattern: Lex appears suddenly, yells “WRONG,” and massive damage follows. More than 300 YTMND sites were made on the theme, which makes it one of the most recognizable fads of the platform’s early years. Know Your Meme added its entry on July 3, 2009 and marks it as confirmed.
