In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Algéééérien” is an epic card of the Permanent Edition French Twitch Memes Season 1, number 54 of the collection, and the 71st best-known meme of its 78 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Algéééérien” meme mean?
The word is used to correct someone who gets an origin, a town or a personal detail wrong, in a theatrical and amused tone. The drawn-out vowels signal mock indignation: nobody is angry, the error simply has to be flagged with panache. Among friends it also fixes a mix-up on a trivial subject, or teases someone who remembered a fact badly. The tone stays friendly, and the joke lies in the length of the word and the gap between the mistake and the reaction, never in a country or its people.
Where does the “Algéééérien” meme come from?
The scene comes from a 2021 stream at AmineMaTue’s, a French-Algerian streamer born in Louviers who grew up in Drancy. Beside him, his friend Billy, alias RebeuDeter, admits that he thought Amine was Tunisian. Amine then corrects him with an “Algéééérien” that never seems to end. A clip channel reposted the extract under the title “Billy ne savait pas qu’Amine était AlgéRééééien”, and it spread widely. The moment owes its popularity to one man’s sincere surprise and the other’s emphasis, two reactions made funnier by a long friendship. The line has since circulated as a GIF and in edits.
